Workshop Description:

This workshop is intended for all levels; in it we will cover the full range of oil painting from start to finish, but will pay special attention to the beginning stage, i.e. composition. The level of success here so often determines the success of the final painting. We will look at several approaches to starting a painting and several successful types of composition, but will try to stay away from the use of formulas.

Plan to get several paintings started and maybe even finished, though in some cases you may want to do the finishing work on your own later. This will be a studio class, so bring your favorite reference photos, sketches or still-life set ups to work from. The class will begin with a brief discussion and instructor demo, but most of the time will be painting time with individual guidance.

Cost: $180

Class Minimum / Maximum Size: 5 / 10

Workshop Description:

Even those who primarily paint in the studio often report that their studio work is much improved by solid plein-air practice. Besides, it's a lot of fun! In this workshop, suitable for all levels, we will work with the full range of subjects that the outdoors has to offer. We will deal with the unique plein-air issues such as changing light and the need to simplify things quickly, and also the many practical issues of working outdoors. So, grab your wide-brimmed hat and let's paint! This class will begin with a brief instructor demo, and then most of the time will be painting time with individual guidance. Note: one of the main plein-air issues is weather, so if it turns bad, we will work indoors at Evergreen Fine Art, using reference photos, sketches, etc. that you bring. Painting locations will be announced well before the first day, but they will be in the greater Evergreen area, and will include my top 2 requirements for happy plein air painting...shade, and restrooms!
